Beautiful Women is a Campaign celebrating the beauty of LGBTI women. It explores the characteristics of beauty, in all the shapes, sizes, colours, abilities and ages that women are. It also celebrates the diversity of beauty and the contributions that LGBTI women have made in challenging narrow definitions of female beauty. Beauty is presented as ‘beyond skin’ to a sense of pride in ‘who we are’.
The Campaign, which is led by Breastscreen Victoria, kicks off with a Premier Event at Midsumma Festival show casing photographs of LGBTI women taken by photographer Lisa White (see In Bed Project and the Social Photographer). Beyond the gender binary the photographs explore the power of LGBTI women and the diverse characteristics of their beauty. Please join us at the Exhibition launch – details below and link to Midsumma Program here.
- Location: Incinerator Gallery, Boadle Hall. 180 Holmes Rd, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039
- Exhibition dates: 20 Jan – 12 Feb
- Exhibition launch event: Friday 20th January. 6-8pm
Participants will be invited to respond to these photographs to describe what they think is beautiful about the women in the photograph. The event invites LBTI women to celebrate their own beauty and is particularly important in the context of debates about same sex marriage – where there are messages that ‘different is less’.
